1.5–3 hours · tours subject to a minimum number of participants, joining existing groups on request · from 6 €24,2 km

For familiesGreat for groupsTime travel

For over 500 years, miners extracted copper and silver ore from the mountain near Öblarn — and today you can follow in their footsteps. The Öblarner Kupferweg in the Walchental, just 20 minutes by car from Schladming, takes you into the astonishingly well-preserved Thaddäusstollen, past old sulphur and smelting furnaces and on to the mining museum in the village. Kitted out in protective clothing, you plunge into a world where the weather outside doesn't matter. A day out for families, history fans and anyone who wants to see the Ennstal from the inside for once.

What awaits you

The Kupferweg combines three experiences: the mining museum in Öblarn with archaeological finds from five centuries, the mystical Thaddäusstollen in the Walchental, and the well-preserved sulphur and smelting furnaces including a silver refining hearth. On the full show trail tour, you even travel through the narrow Walchental by tractor and covered wagon — great fun for children and adults alike. Underground, the guides tell of the miners' hard daily lives and of the region's 'white gold': copper.

Prices, dates & registration

The museum tour (approx. 35 minutes) costs € 6.00, the tour of the mine and furnaces (approx. 1.5 hours) € 10.00, and the full show trail tour with tractor ride (approx. 3 hours) € 20.00 per person; pupils and students pay half price, children up to 6 go free (as of July 2026). Mine and show trail tours run from June to September, while the museum is accessible year-round by prior arrangement. Important: register by 5 pm the day before at the latest on +43 664 3900003 — the tours require minimum numbers of participants, so smaller groups are best off asking about joining existing dates.

Getting there from Schladming

On the B320 towards Liezen, you reach the Öblarn exit after around 20 kilometres and are in the village centre after about 20 minutes in total. The meeting point and schedule depend on the tour you've booked: for the Berghaus by the mine, you drive a short way into the Walchental in your own car; on the show trail tour, you start in the village and are chauffeured by covered wagon. You'll get the details when you register by phone.

Insider tips

It stays cool down the mine all year round — sturdy shoes and a warm jacket belong in your luggage, and protective clothing is provided on site. With the Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard, admission is even free. After the tour, a stop at one of the inns in Öblarn is worthwhile, and if you still have energy, combine the outing with a detour to Schloss Trautenfels on the other side of the valley.
