Silberkarklamm & the Hias, Rosina and Siega Via Ferratas
1.5–4 hrs · from 1 person · from 4,9 €5,4 km
When the spring meltwater thunders through the Silberkarklamm, Ramsau shows its wildest side. Along wooden walkways and bridges you hike beside the roaring Silberkarbach, past the 70-metre Schleierfall, until the quiet valley basin with the Silberkarhütte opens up at the far end. And if you're after more than a walk: with Hias, Rosina and Siega, three via ferratas await, leading you up the rock faces directly above the rushing water. Just around 20 minutes by car from your hotel in Schladming begins one of the most beautiful gorge experiences in Styria — from mid-May, when the gorge awakens from its winter sleep.
What awaits you
The Silberkarklamm is a narrow rocky gorge at the foot of the Dachstein massif. Well-secured walkways and bridges take you through the gorge in around 1.5 to 2 hours — past sheer rock walls, the thundering Torbachfall and the spectacular, 70-metre Schleierfall. The circular walk is about 4 kilometres long and easily manageable for sure-footed families too. In the valley basin at the far end, a stop at the Silberkarhütte is well worth it before heading back the same way or via the alternative route.
The three via ferratas
Branching directly off the gorge trail are the two via ferratas Hias and Rosina — both grade D (very difficult) with spectacular rope bridges above the gorge. In the far Silberkar awaits the Siega via ferrata: built in 2009, with 260 metres of steel cable it's the longest but technically easiest of the three. For the climbing you'll need complete via ferrata equipment (harness, set, helmet) and experience. The ambitious combine all three routes in a single day — allow a full morning plus afternoon for that.
Prices & opening times
The gorge is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm from mid-May to the end of October — the exact start of the season depends on snow conditions, so it's worth calling +43 664 3009843 early in the season. Admission costs €4.90 for adults and €2.90 for children; groups of 15 or more pay €4.50 and €2.50 respectively (as of July 2026). Important: only cash is accepted at the ticket booth. The via ferratas themselves cost nothing extra once you've paid gorge admission.
Getting there from Schladming
By car, drive from Schladming up the Ramsaustrasse towards Ramsau am Dachstein. In Ramsau-Rössing, at the historic Lodenwalke, the signposted access road branches off to the Silberkarklamm car park. It's around 11 kilometres in total and you'll be there in about 15 to 20 minutes. From the car park, steps lead along the Silberkarbach to the gorge entrance in just a few minutes.
Springtime tip
Late spring is perhaps the most beautiful time for the Silberkarklamm: the meltwater makes the waterfalls roar with extra power, and on weekdays in May and June you'll often have the gorge almost to yourself. Wear sturdy shoes — the walkways can be damp from the spray — and pack a light jacket, as it's noticeably cooler in the gorge than down in the valley. Via ferrata climbers are best off starting early, while the rock is still dry and the crowds are small.

Tip: Come early in the morning — the gorge opens at 8 am and is still pleasantly quiet. Bring cash, as cards are not accepted at the ticket booth. For the via ferratas you'll need a complete via ferrata set and experience; if you'd rather just walk, you can enjoy the gorge without any climbing at all.
