Museum Zeitroas Ramsau am Dachstein
1–1.5 hours · any number · Free4,1 km
Ramsau am Dachstein is more than cross-country trails and mountain farms — the high plateau has a history like no other. At the Museum Zeitroas, housed in the lovingly converted Pehabstall in the middle of Ramsau-Ort, you go on a 'journey through time': you'll learn how the Protestant faith survived here in secret for centuries, how the opening up of the Dachstein shaped the region, and how the mountain farming village became a tourist destination. Children have their own discovery trail with museum mouse Klaus — and admission doesn't cost a penny.
What awaits you
Across around 300 m² of exhibition space, the Zeitroas tells of settlement and farming life, of hunting and alpine wildlife, of the Reformation, Counter-Reformation and secret Protestantism — a chapter that shapes Ramsau to this day — and of course of the opening up of the Dachstein by daring alpine pioneers. Since January 2025 there has also been a special exhibition on the hit ZDF series 'Die Bergretter', which is filmed in Ramsau. Children explore the house with museum mouse Klaus.
Opening hours & admission
Admission is free (as of July 2026). The museum opens in two seasons: in summer from June to the end of September (e.g. Mon/Tue mornings, Wed all day, Thu and Fri afternoons) and in winter from Christmas to Easter (Wed–Fri afternoons, Wed also mornings). Group visits and special appointments — for instance in bad weather — are possible on request on +43 664 88 640 644. You'll find the current daily opening times at zeitroas.at.
Getting there from Schladming
From Schladming, the Ramsauer Landesstrasse winds its way up in hairpin bends onto the sunny plateau — after around 9 kilometres and 15 minutes you arrive in Ramsau-Ort. The museum is centrally located (Ramsau 227), and you'll find parking in the village area. A lovely bonus: even in dull weather the drive up is an experience, and when the clouds break you have the south faces of the Dachstein right in front of you.
Insider tips
Combine your museum visit with a stop at one of the Ramsau cafés or — if the weather improves — with a short stroll along the panoramic trail. Bergretter fans should allow time for the special exhibition and then go looking for the series' filming locations in the village. In winter, the museum is the perfect afternoon activity when the trails and slopes fall into shadow early.
