Kammspitze is the striking, serrated peak on the eastern edge of the Dachstein range and one of the most panoramic day hikes in the Gröbming area. From the town, a steep path leads through forest and dwarf pines to the secured summit section. The views open towards Dachstein and Grimming while the emerald Miesbodensee sparkles below. The long descent heads north to the Viehbergalm and finally through the Öfen gorge to the Kneipp facility in Lend—an engaging full-day outing for sure-footed hikers.

Ascent: From the cemetery via Säbelboden to the ridge

Start at the Catholic cemetery car park and follow signs via Hofmanning. The hollow path soon turns into a mountain trail, zigzagging over Säbelboden as views to Stoderzinken and the Enns Valley open up. The final section traverses the shaded north flank with short secured steps that require a head for heights. After roughly 1,300 meters of ascent you reach the 2,139 m summit and its superb panorama.

Descent: To Viehbergalm and Miesbodensee

From the summit, the marked trail drops over secured steps towards Kammalm. Below lies the small Miesbodensee, a perfect rest spot on warm days. Easy forest roads lead to the Viehbergalm with serviced huts in summer—ideal for a rustic lunch before the final stage.

Through the Öfen gorge to the Kneipp facility

Continue via the Eckangerl descent and Rahnstube into the wild Öfen gorge. Towering rock walls frame the path as you return to the valley. Finish at the Kneipp facility in Lend, where cold stream water soothes tired legs. Placing a car here in advance makes logistics easier.

Safety & gear

This is a long, steep alpine hike. Go only in stable weather. Wear solid boots and carry layers, sun protection, sufficient water and food. The secured sections demand sure-footedness and a good head for heights. Avoid ridges and summit zones in thunderstorms. Emergency: 140 (mountain rescue) or 112.

  • Far-reaching ridge views to Dachstein, Grimming & Schladminger Tauern
  • Tranquil Miesbodensee and rustic Viehbergalm
  • Scenic descent through the Öfen gorge
  • Refreshing finish at the Kneipp facility

Tip: Car shuttle hack: leave one car at the Kneipp facility in Lend and drive the other to the cemetery car park to simplify the return.

Getting there: From Schladming center take B320 east to exit Gröbming OST, then to the Catholic cemetery car park (about 18 km/17 min). By public transport: REX train to Gröbming (around 16–20 min), then walk/taxi to the start.

Price: Free of charge; local parking rules may apply. As of September 2026.
