Preintalerhütte via the Höll Alpine Trail
approx. 5:00 h (out & back) · moderate · For sure-footed adults, couples, friends and small groups; experienced teens recommended. · from 0 €17,4 km
This classic day hike blends the raw power of the Riesach Falls with the Alpine calm of Riesachsee and the welcoming Preintalerhütte. From the Seeleiten trailhead, ladders, platforms and a slender suspension bridge lead you through the Höll gorge. Gentle paths along the lakeshore continue into the secluded upper valley where several major routes of the Schladminger Tauern meet at Preintalerhütte. There are several huts to stop for food. Go only in stable dry weather, be sure-footed, and use the forest road for the descent.
Route & character
Starting at Seeleiten, the Höll trail requires balance and a head for heights, but rewards with balcony-like viewpoints and the suspension bridge right above the torrent. After Gfölleralm you skirt the turquoise Riesachsee and continue on moderate-grade paths to Preintalerhütte and Waldhornalm. Return the same way, descending on the forest road. Pure walking time is about 5 hours and requires moderate fitness.
Safety & gear
Sections of the gorge are permanently damp and slippery. Sturdy hiking boots, poles, weather and sun protection, and enough water are essential. Postpone in case of thunderstorms; avoid exposed ridges and the bridge when lightning is possible. Families: only with sure-footed, supervised children. Check conditions and forecasts in advance; hut staff can provide up-to-date advice.
Getting there & parking
By car from Schladming via Rohrmoos to Untertal and the Seeleiten car park (paid). Easier and greener: seasonal bus line 974 from Planet Planai or Schladming station right to the start. With the Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard the bus is included and parking is discounted.
Food stops & extensions
Almgasthaus Riesachfall, Gfölleralm, Preintalerhütte and Waldhornalm offer food and drinks along the way. With extra time and energy, add the Sonntagskar lakes detour for even grander views. Ambitious hikers can plan further summit tours from the hut, but these require more time, skill and perfect weather.
