Stoderzinken & Friedenskircherl – Summit Hike from Gröbming
5–6 h · moderate · ideal for fit, sure-footed hikers without fear of heights · from 0 €14,4 km
This panoramic summit loop starts at the Adventure Park/Zipline car park in Gröbming and climbs through cool forest and alpine meadows to the 2,048 m Stoderzinken. Choose between the airy Florasteig or the gentler Latschenweg to reach the summit ridge. A short side trip to the picture‑perfect Friedenskircherl—Austria’s ‘most beautiful place’ in 2022—is a must. Graded ‘moderate’, the route demands fitness and sure‑footedness (exposure on Florasteig). Bring water, sun protection and start early on warm days.
Route & difficulty
From the car park, follow trail no. 679 along the Dürrenbach, crossing the panorama road several times. Continue on the historic Stoderweg (no. 675) towards Stoderhütte and the Rossegger memorial. Here you choose: the exposed, secured Florasteig (for the sure‑footed) or the less exposed but still steep Latschenweg. The loop totals around 16 km, so solid fitness is required. Descend via the ascent route or complete the round back to the starting point.
Friedenskircherl & views
Make the short detour to the famed Friedenskircherl, tucked into the south face of Stoderzinken. From here and the summit crest you enjoy sweeping views of the Dachstein glaciers, the Schladminger Tauern and the Enns Valley. Late‑afternoon light is perfect for photos. Please stay on marked trails and respect the fragile alpine flora.
Safety & gear
Waymarking is good, but sturdy boots, weather and sun protection, water and snacks are essential. For the Florasteig you need sure‑footedness and a head for heights; avoid it in wet or stormy conditions and choose the Latschenweg. Check the forecast and tell someone your plan. In emergencies dial 140 (mountain rescue) or 112.
Access, season & services
Best from May to October in snow‑free conditions. Drive via B320 to Gröbming, then the Stoderzinken Alpine Road; parking at the Adventure Park/Zipline before the toll. frequently asked questions.
Is it suitable for children?
Only for experienced, sure‑footed teens; the length/steepness and the Florasteig make it unsuitable for small children. A shorter option is the walk to the Friedenskircherl from Rosemi Alm.
Do I need via ferrata gear on Florasteig?
No full via‑ferrata set is required, but the path is exposed and secured in places—sure‑footedness and a good head for heights are essential.
Are there huts on the route?
Yes, e.g., Steinerhaus and seasonal alpine huts along the panorama road. Check opening times in advance.
Can I save money with the Sommercard?
Yes. May 14–Jul 10 and Sep 14–Nov 1, 2026 the toll road is included; Jul 11–Sep 13 it is not included, but the shuttle bus is.
How busy is the alpine road?
Use the shuttle bus during summer holidays. Outside that period, start early and observe the toll/traffic regulations.
